New Parent Training


Adoption Preparation is a six-hour course to prepare families who will adopt and to support families who already have. The course is provided in partnership with Adoption Learning Partners and Project Hopeful.


DCFS Training: From 9am to 3:30pm, Judy Stigger of Adoption Learning Partners will provide 6-hours of the live training required for families adopting. Judy will address:

  • Adoption as a Legal Process
  • Referrals & Medical Resources
  • Understanding the Impact of a Child’s History on Future Development
  • Adjustment & Attachment
  • Helping Your Child Develop (incl. Early Intervention & Adoption Preservation Services)
  • Talking to Your Child about Adoption & the Continuum of Openness in Adoption
  • Conspicuous Families: race / ethnicity, special needs, older-child placements, etc

Understanding Special Needs Adoption. Together with Project Hopeful, our care team will address the following topics: Medical, developmental, and psychosocial aspects of adoption

  • Addressing special needs such as: clef palate, hearing loss, or Down syndrome. We will also review services our team can provide.
  • Preparing to travel abroad to meet your child
  • Thriving with HIV in the 21st Century
  • Overview of needed
  • Parents from Project Hopeful will address questions including: day-to-day experiences; medications & medical visits; and how to prepare your family for challenges

The next session will be held from 9am to 5pm on April 13, 2013 at the University of Chicago.

The fee is $150 per family (single parents are invited to bring one support person.) Your registration includes pizza lunch & all-day parking. Refunds allowed only by March 29th.
